Morning Wahines,
Today, I'd like to share with you a funny little story about my high school summer job and the lessons I learned and am still learning from that experience.
One of my quirkiest jobs to date was running my own independent shave ice stand (think big wooden shave ice store on wheels) on a busy street in Kailua. I was a 10th grade high school student, not big into the traditional job thing. I was already on my way to becoming an entrepreneur, thanks to my Dad who helped me come up with a job where I could be my own boss. I even paid rent to use the space from a local market, which I was so proud of. It was a blast and I met loads of tourists from all over which I thought was pretty cool! All my friends would stop by and before long, my shave ice stand was so popular that everyone would bring party fliers for me to pass out.
One story that stands out for me and still makes me laugh happened early on in my shave ice career on a hot summer day. Some tourists came by and I was really excited to be fixing up their shave ice. I was still learning the ropes and perfecting my ability to make shave ice and give back proper change in a decent amount of time. I remember pouring the banana syrup on the shave ice and noticing that the shave ice had brown spots all over it and I had no idea what it was from. I was too preoccupied on giving back proper change to investigate. After my customers had walked off to their cars, I inspected the syrup and was shocked to find out that the banana shave ice syrup had been invaded by ants. Ahhhh!! I was so embarrassed that I packed up and called it a day! Needless to say, I was more careful in the future and never had another bug invasion.
That summer, I had a blast! I learned the ins and outs of running my own business, customer service, and being my own boss. Looking back, I realize how much I enjoyed that job because I was having fun all the time, I was truly in the moment, and I was really connecting with people. These days, business is so fast paced and busy and we're so glued to technology that we don't always take the time to really connect with others, and be present with them, and to take a few extra minutes to listen to our customers. I realize technology has really changed the way we live and work and I've decided to practice the "shave ice principles" in my current business. I hope this inspires you to take time everyday to be in the moment and find and give enjoyment in all that you do.
