Mai'a Project's Community Work Day

posted by toby portner on Mon, Aug 13 2012 13:54
On Saturday, August 18th, the public is invited to join 808 Urban for an inspiring day of community workshops that support Hawai'i's at-risk youth.
808 Urban is looking for community support for their first Mai'a Project, a youth project raising awareness on Hawai'i's sex-trafficking issue through visual art. Participation in doll-making, stenciling, and tshirt cutting workshops will help these students generate inventory for the products they designed to sell at a final benefit launch party in September. Community members are asked to bring their sewing machines, fabric scissors, and any (non-stretch) fabric donations.
The Mai’a Project has a social entrepreneurial focus, engaging youth to work with 808 Urban’s organizational partners to design custom merchandise lines through a series of arts-education workshops. The first project began last month and is a 12 week long summer program and females only. In partnership with Pacific Alliance to Stop Slavery (PASS) this group of youth challenges themselves to find visual solutions to Hawai'i's very real sex-trafficking issue. Youth and educating artists are collaborating on merchandise designs that educate the public and support survivors of sex-trafficking by instilling empowerment and healing into the products made. As young at-risk girls in Hawai'i are targeted victims, this project plays a crucial role in engaging our group of female youth to continue educating among their peers about this issue.
808 Urban is a collective of "community cultural workers": artists, organizers and volunteers committed to improving the quality of life for Hawai'i's communities through arts programming. 808 Urban's focus on artistic development and innovation gives participants tools to become public voices for their communities. Through 808 Urban arts programs, The Junior Board Initiative, The Community Murals Project, The 808 Urban Refuge, and HIstory Productions, particular emphasis is placed on mentoring youth as a long term resolution to social transformation.
*(The work day is located in a warehouse in the parking lot between 808 Urban's storefront "The Refuge" and Chai Boutique). Parking is available in the same parking lot and across the street. There is also street parking in the area).
